Now I know you know the light only comes on when you open the door. But the refrigerator is always on! It has to be to do its job.

One individual I know worked many years as an electrician for a major U.S. automobile manufacturer. At the suggestion of a good friend, he decided to pursue a sales career in the financial services industry. This was a pretty major change in vocation; he went from dealing with watts and volts to handling people’s investment and insurance needs.

Was he a success? Well, in his first full year he shot up to becoming the top rep in North America for his company. To prove he was not a one hit wonder, he repeated this feat his second year, and yes, the third year too! To this day, he remains one of the top reps with his company.

So how did an electrician, now a salesman, become so successful? If you ask this modest man, he will say “It’s simple really, you do the best you can for your client, and you always have to be on.”

To meet this gentleman, you would know someone with an insatiable appetite for learning. He wanted to know everything he could about financial planning and the products he represented. He was a keen student of his sales manager and a constant observer of the successful reps around him. He was a sponge.

One day, I asked him what he meant when he said being “on”. He told me “To be successful I have to meet a lot of new people. I have to be able to tell them quickly what it is I do and how I can help them.” He went on to say, “I look at everyone as an opportunity.” “When I go to the super-market I look for the longest line and stand in it, I know I’ll have a chance to strike up a conversation with the person in front of me, and the person who comes behind me.” Talk about captive audience.

I marvelled at one story he told me about when he went shopping for a bed cover and pillows. After he completed his purchase he thought, “I’ve done business with you, you should do business with me.” He proceeded to book an appointment with the sales clerk who had sold him his pillows. He also asked if she would introduce him to her manager and the other sales clerks. He left the store that day with five appointments booked in his day timer.

Why? Because he was always “on”.

Credit card laws allowed them to do this, and the argument was that you had become more of a risk to them.

However, under the new law says they have to give you at least 45 days notice and give you a chance to close your account. Granted, that may not be the best option, but it’s better than it used to be. In addition, the new law says that any increase in interest rates can only be applied to new balances. This is more fair as you should (in theory) always know what interest rate is being charged on any purchases, regardless of how old they are.

Prior to the new credit card laws, any amount you paid above the minimum payment could be applied in the way the credit card company saw fit. What this usually meant is that they would apply it to your balance with the lowest interest rate. This allowed them to collect even more from you by letting the higher interest balances bring in more money. Now the law states that they have to apply any extra to your highest rate balance first.

There are other provisions in the credit card laws that are meant to help the consumer. However, the law still largely favors the credit card companies so don’t think everything will work in your favor; it won’t. To put it another way, the laws are better than what they were, but they still have a long way to go.

Anyone that works in sales knows just how important it is to have lead sources to keep your pipeline filled. But it is not only how we obtain the leads that is important, it’s what we do with them once we get them.

One of the most critical mistakes a sales person can make once they receive a lead, is not acting on it immediately.

I once worked with a guy who belonged to a networking group, the soul purpose of his joining this group was to receive leads. This group wasn’t cheap either, it cost him $500.00 annually to be a member.

He would come back from his weekly meeting with a lead in his hand and pin it to the bulletin board above his desk, and there it would stay until he noticed it a few days later.

It drove me nuts!

In sales, and it does not matter what you are selling, every day is critical! At any moment, your competitor can call your customer and walk away with the business.

Another common mistake I have witnessed countless times, is contacting the lead in a timely fashion, but having absolutely no enthusiasm once you contact the customer.

When you call a potential customer, smile as you speak to them, the customer will pick up on the inflection in your voice and respond to it.

Don’t act as though the customer is a burden to you, and that you are doing them a favor.

Remember, you are the expert when it comes to your product, don’t expect your customer to know everything, if they did, they wouldn’t need you. So make sure they know that you are happy to help them.

Another no-no when following up on a lead is to yawn, sneeze, or cough into the receiver of the phone. I understand that these are normal and common bodily functions, but there is no excuse for doing it directly into the receiver, this is a great way to loose the sale, the yawn alone will most likely make the customer hang up the phone.

Always put yourself in the shoes of the customer. Imagine meeting someone for the first time over the telephone and your conversation is being interrupted by yawns, and sneezes, I doubt you would be gung-ho about doing business with them

Following up with a lead and then putting that person on hold is another common mistake I have come across. Although your reasons for putting your customer on hold may seem very important to you, your customer will find it to be annoying regardless of your reasons. So be sure to set aside a time to call your lead when you know the interruptions will be few.

So the next time you receive a lead, act on it immediately, let your customer know that you are happy to work with them, speak clearly and avoid interruptions, and watch your sales productivity increase!

You should be no different! Advertisement takes on a whole new meaning when you have the means to do it! Let’s take for instance the super bowl games. Look at how much is dropped for a 30 second spot at half time! Does that spot become that important? Well we made it that way you and me and everyone else in the US! Same thing happens with other countries with different sports. Let’s stop here for just a sec.

Otitis externa is also known as ‘external otitis’ or more commonly ‘swimmer’s ear’. This is an inflammation of the outer ear and ear canal and can cause a nasty earache. Swimmers ear is a very common form of earache and get’s it’s name because people often develop it after swimming as it is caused by excess moisture that is left in the ear.

Although this often occurs after swimming, that is not always the case and if the conditions are right, anybody can develop swimmer’s ear. Some people can become susceptible to swimmer’s ear and can spend quite a bit of money on doctor visits and medications each time the infection occurs.

Those people who are susceptible to swimmer’s ear, or having children that are prone to it, will often seek a home remedy that might help them relieve the pain associated with the infection or even clear the infection completely. There are a few different home remedies that can be used to treat ear infections, but the results will be determined by the severity of the infection and some remedies just work better for some people than others.

Although home remedies can be quite effective for treating ear infections, if the pain is severe you should consult a doctor to get a proper diagnosis and to make sure that it isn’t anything more serious. If you suffer from swimmer’s ear often then you will get to know the symptoms and can possibly treat it with home remedies if you catch it early.

If you are experienced with ear infections then you will know how they feel and whether they are bad enough to warrant a trip to the doctor or whether you can treat it with a home remedy.

Just tilt your head to the side and add no more than two drops into the ear. You can gently rub your ear or move your head to let the alcohol move around the ear canal. Let is sit for a few minutes and then rinse your ear with warm water.

A similar method to this is to use water and vinegar instead of alcohol. A mixture of 50/50 water and vinegar helps to kill the bacteria in the ear. Just apply a few drops using the same technique as above and you can sometimes see results quite fast with this remedy.

Prevention is often better than cure and in many cases swimmer’s ear can be prevented by wearing ear plugs when swimming. Another way to prevent swimmer’s ear is to dry your ears gently with a hair dryer, just to dry up any excess moisture after swimming. Just make sure to keep the hair dryer on a cool setting and not to have it too close to the ear.

If you suffer from swimmer’s ear often then take measures to try and keep your ears dry and stop an infection from developing.

If you are a parent of a child that has suffered from ear infections then you might be interested to know that there are some very effective home remedies that can be used to treat them. Some children can be very prone to earn infections and over time can cost a small fortune from all those doctors visits. Then there is also the times when an earache begins at night when it is difficult to see a doctor or on vacation and a good home remedy can give the child relief until such a time that you can visit a doctor. Of course, if the ear pain is severe and doesn’t subside with use of the home remedy, then you should still visit a doctor as soon as you are able.

Ear infections have haunted people for many years and long before prescribed medications were available they were treated with natural remedies. Many remedies are made from products that you will likely already have in your home. The effective home remedies to treat ear infections have been used for many years, even after prescribed medications became available, and are still being used today.

A warm compress is always a good option for earaches. For a warm compress you can use a wheat bag if you have one and if not you can make a compress by putting some rice into a sock and warming it in the microwave for one minute. Then place the compress on the child’s sore ear and let them lie on their side with the bad ear facing down. By using a warm compress this way it can help to drain any blockage in the child’s ear which may relieve the pain.

Hydrogen peroxide is often found in most medicine cabinets and is usually used to clean wounds and kill any germs. A few drops of hydrogen peroxide in a sore ear will help to kill any bacteria in the ear that might be causing the infection.

If you would prefer a more natural alternative to hydrogen peroxide then lemon juice is a great choice. Because lemon juice is highly acidic it neutralizes the pH which stops the growth of the bacteria.

The next home remedy to treat ear infections is a recipe from the kitchen which contains onion, garlic and olive oil. You need to simmer the onion and garlic in some oil and water. Simmer until the mixture reduces and then strain the mixture so you are left with a liquid. When cool, apply a few drops into the sore ear. This can kill the infection and if used at the first sign of ear infection it can clear it up quite fast.

A mixture of vinegar and water is another handy recipe to treat ear infections. Just mix 50% water with 50% vinegar and apply a few drops into the sore ear.

Lastly, and an unlikely remedy is vodka. And no we aren’t suggesting your child drink vodka until they no longer feel pain! Just dab some vodka onto a cotton ball and hold it against the ear.

A remedy that might work for one child might not work for another, so you may need to try a few of the remedies until you find one that works well for your child. Once you know which remedy works for your child then it will be there ready for you whenever your child develops an ear infection. Remember, if pain persists or is severe then take your child to see a doctor as soon as possible.
